Where they come from: Halley's Comet (1P/Halley)

Dust shed by Halley's Comet on its earlier passes. Earth meets Halley's stream twice a year: in May as the Eta Aquariids and in October as the Orionids.

The estimate is how many you might really see from a dark spot here, allowing for how high the shower climbs and for moonlight. "Under a perfect sky" is the best case. The bar also counts the forecast cloud at the best time, so a clouded-out night sits at the bottom, as does rain on the radar now.

Comes from Halley's Comet. Best from the Southern Hemisphere, in the hours before dawn.

Buddha Purnima, the full moon of Vaishakha, remembers the birth, enlightenment and death of the Buddha, all said to have fallen on this full moon. Pilgrims gather at Bodh Gaya, where he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, whose heart-shaped leaves are the festival's sign.
