Where they come from: Comet Thatcher (C/1861 G1)

Dust from Comet Thatcher, which comes round about every 415 years and was last near the Sun in 1861. Chinese astronomers recorded the Lyrids in 687 BC, the oldest shower on record.

The estimate is how many you might really see from a dark spot here, allowing for how high the shower climbs and for moonlight. "Under a perfect sky" is the best case. The bar also counts the forecast cloud at the best time, so a clouded-out night sits at the bottom, as does rain on the radar now.

Usually steady, but now and then it has a short burst of many more.
