One of only two major showers from an asteroid, not a comet: 3200 Phaethon, a 'rock comet' that sheds dust when it passes close to the Sun. Its dust is denser than most, which is why Geminids are bright and slow.
The estimate is how many you might really see from a dark spot here, allowing for
how high the shower climbs and for moonlight. "Under a perfect sky" is the best case.
The bar also counts the forecast cloud at the best time, so a clouded-out night sits at
the bottom, as does rain on the radar now.
The strongest shower of the year, and you can watch it most of the night.
