Tanabata, the star festival on July 7, tells of two lovers in the sky: Orihime the weaver - the star Vega - and Hikoboshi the cowherd - Altair - parted by the Milky Way and allowed to meet only on this night. People write wishes on strips of colored paper, tanzaku, and hang them on bamboo.

Look up after dark: Vega is the bright star high in the east, Altair lower and to its right, with the Milky Way running between them where the sky is dark. It is a festival, not a day off; some places, Sendai among them, keep it in August by the old calendar.
