Where they come from: Halley's Comet (1P/Halley)

Dust shed by Halley's Comet on its earlier passes. Earth meets Halley's stream twice a year: in May as the Eta Aquariids and in October as the Orionids.

The estimate is how many you might really see from a dark spot here, allowing for how high the shower climbs and for moonlight. "Under a perfect sky" is the best case. The bar also counts the forecast cloud at the best time, so a clouded-out night sits at the bottom, as does rain on the radar now.

Comes from Halley's Comet. Best from the Southern Hemisphere, in the hours before dawn.

The early May bank holiday, the first Monday of May, has been kept in the UK since 1978 and in Ireland since 1994. It follows May Day, the old festival of the start of summer, with maypole dancing, Morris dancers and a May Queen crowned on village greens.
