St Brigid's Day, February 1, honors Brigid of Kildare, one of Ireland's patron saints, and marks Imbolc, the old Gaelic start of spring. Crosses are woven from rushes and hung by the door to protect the house for the year. Since 2023 Ireland has a public holiday for it: the first Monday of February, or February 1 when that is a Friday.
